Description

Accessible but rigorous, this outstanding text encompasses all of the topics covered by a typical course in elementary abstract algebra. Its easy-to-read treatment offers an intuitive approach, featuring informal discussions followed by thematically arranged exercises. Intended for undergraduate courses in abstract algebra, it is suitable for junior- and senior-level math majors and future math teachers. This second edition features additional exercises to improve student familiarity with applications.
An introductory chapter traces concepts of abstract algebra from their historical roots. Succeeding chapters avoid the conventional format of definition-theorem-proof-corollary-example; instead, they take the form of a discussion with students, focusing on explanations and offering motivation. Each chapter rests upon a central theme, usually a specific application or use. The author provides elementary background as needed and discusses standard topics in their usual order. He introduces many advanced and peripheral subjects in the plentiful exercises, which are accompanied by ample instruction and commentary and offer a wide range of experiences to students at different levels of ability.

  1. ive never read a math book like a novel before: very clear very easy to digest this material.

i will mention that some standard stuff like sylow or modules isnt really in this book (it sticks to a solid core of groups rings fields galois and lin alg) but if youre starting or struggling with abstract algebra this book is extremely lucid. id pair it with another text that goes beyond it like jacobson or dummit and foote or artin etc etc

  2. I have been using this to self teach myself abstract algebra, and the book works quite well for me.

The book only expects some high-school level algebra experience and being comfortable with proofs.

It guides the reader through many different topics, and does with many exercises of varying difficulty.

The problems are never focused on computation, only maybe the first exercises in a set will involve any, and this is just to get you comfortable with what you’ll need for the more complex questions.

Overall, this is a extremely good book for someone looking to learn the topic, I do recommend this for anyone interested in learning higher math.

  5. Pinter’s exposition of each chapter’s contents is very strong. Many important theorems and ideas that are usually covered within the text of other algebra books are left as end of chapter exercises, making this book ideal for students and not as a comprehensive reference. Many topics covered in other algebra books do not appear at all, so it may be necessary for some to revisit algebra with a different book sometime later in their careers.
