Description
The legendary introduction to physics from the subject’s greatest teacher
“The whole thing was basically an experiment,” Richard Feynman said late in his career, looking back on the origins of his lectures. The experiment turned out to be hugely successful, spawning a book that has remained a definitive introduction to physics for decades. Ranging from the most basic principles of Newtonian physics through such formidable theories as general relativity and quantum mechanics, Feynman’s lectures stand as a monument of clear exposition and deep insight.
The content is excellent, five stars.
Regarding the print, the font is small and the use of space could be better.
Better quality than i Expected
The three volume set makes each individual volume easy to carry around without having to schlepp the extra burden of the other two volumes. The binding and print is excellent and should last an academic lifetime.
Although this was compiled as a series of lectures for beginning undergraduate students, it is greatly more detailed and mathematically inclined then pretty much any standard currently used undergraduate general physics textbook-and contains many details that I only encountered as a graduate student in physics or in upper division undergraduate classes such as the 2-semester course purely in E&M.
This should be mandatory reading for every graduate student as a way of consolidating their knowledge, but will be a bit overwhelming for all but the most advanced undergraduate students who only are doing a 2-semester physics course to satisfy graduation requirements.
One thing that is consistent is the sheer clarity of writing-which is done in a thoroughly engaging fashion that encourages the reader to keep on reading. Feynman was an unparalleled educator with a gift of simplifying the complex.
It is true that the material was compiled well over 50 years ago, and will not include the latest developments especially in quantum mechanics. But the quantum mechanics that are represented are still fresh and applicable. Just do not expect to read about the Higgs Particle.
Anyone who was inspired to learn more about physics after being exposed to Feynman’s lectures back in the 50’s or 60’s will enjoy these reissues of the old texts. They are a high quality, cost effective alternative to trying to find the originals in used book stores. Dig out your slide rule and revisit the days when physics was fun!
Great material for all physics students, but if you’re looking for a brand new copy with no wear and tear, consider shopping elsewhere. My supposedly new boxed set came with a tear in the case, stains and creases on the books, and some sort of white dust coating the books. Would be fine if I ordered a used copy but it was supposed to be new.
